What Are Dhakas?

Dhakas are traditional scarves woven at our Women’s Microenterprise Cooperative in Sabhung, Nepal. Each scarf is hand woven by a member of our women’s cooperative who has taken the opportunity to educate herself in financial matters and in the art of a handicraft. Mr. Vivek Mishra, a Nepali textile expert (and Namlo Nepal Board Member) who also provides us with beautiful pashminas, taught the women their skills in weaving, and provides technical support on an ongoing basis. For many of the weavers, the money they earn from the dhakas is their pathway out of poverty and a real source of empowerment. With this income they are able to provide for their families and send their children to school.

Sabhung weaver - low resThe dhakas are made out of various materials including silk, cotton, and bamboo and their rich textures and vibrant colors make for a wonderful gift that helps to provide for the wellbeing of women in Nepal. As they are hand-woven, each dhaka is unique and one of a kind. We are sure to include the name of the weaver who created each beautiful dhaka as a personal reminder that your purchase directly helps the women of the Sabhung co-op. We invite you to become part of these women’s stories, and let their lovely handiwork become part of yours.
