How We Work – Where We Work

Kanchi with Ladies in Dhuskun

Namlo Coordinator Kanchi Sherpa with Dhuskun Women’s Cooperative Members

Namlo works with communities to create a shared vision, and then helping them with training, tools and resources to be able to achieve their goals.  The partnership starts by communities inviting Namlo to visit them, and having discussions, meetings and assessments that help identify the extent of the relationship, the types of changes community members would like to see, the extent of their involvement and investment in the process and their willingness to help themselves.  The relationship can be long, and Namlo operates from a ten year window of opportunity to ensure that when it leaves, there will be lasting change that is sustainable.

The extent of Namlo’s involvement is determined by the community, but in general Namlo supports project activities in community infrastructure, education, income-generation, women’s empowerment, leadership and capacity building, and market-oriented activities that can provide the economic engine that keeps positive developments going into the future.

Since 1999, Namlo has operated in Nepal in Tanahu District (Sabhung and Khamdenu) and in Sindhupalchowk District (Yarmasing and Dhuskun).  Namlo has built four schools in the four communities, two community/business centers, two water systems, and has implemented adult literacy, health, agriculture, and women’s entrepreneurship programs in all locations.

In 2006, Namlo launched program activities in Nicaragua, and has been working in the communities of El Salmeron, Barrio Nuevo, Los Pinares, and El Quebracho, all located in Miraflor District, near Esteli. Namlo has built schools in all four communities, built school kitchens, implemented teacher training, and constructed water and sanitation programs.  Most recently (August 2014), Namlo has launched a household greenhouse project designed to improve nutrition, dietary diversity and rural incomes in all four communities.  In the coming months, Namlo seeks to expand this program within all four communities, but also in other areas of Nicaragua.  Likewise, Namlo will be expanding in other communities in Nepal, and looks forward to beginning operations in new countries in the coming years.building a greenhouse
