Miraflor School Inaugurated
In the Fall of 2007 Namlo and the people of the community of Miraflor, Nicaragua completed
a beautiful school with the help of our friends at Rotary. It is now inaugurated and
students are attending classes. To follow the progress of its construction click here.
Namlo International is a 501(3)c non-profit organization, that focuses on education as the key to empowering people in impoverished rural communities to build a sustainable future for themselves.
Our name is taken from the Nepalese namlo -- a head strap (pictured in our logo and in the photographs, right) that people in Nepal use to carry heavy loads. It reminds us of our goal: to empower people through education to carry their lives forward.
Namlo was founded in 1999 by mountaineer Magda King and her husband, Dr. Hugh King. With funds from private donors, Namlo has built and helped communities to support four schools -- two in Nepal and the most recent two in Nicaragua. A site for an additional school in Miraflor, Nicaragua, has been selected, with construction scheduled to start in October 2007.
Our Mission:
To help people of developing countries help themselves through education and grassrroots programs, while providing an opportunity for students in the United States to learn about global issues and experience the joy of helping others.
