School Enhancement
CURRENT PROJECTS
At the request of the community, Namlo provides teacher training, lending libraries, supplies and materials that help improve the quality of education.
Teacher training grants. Teachers in Nepal will be able to take advantage of Namlo's most recent collaboration with Chandeswori English Boarding School in Barhabise, the largest town in the region. We are currently negotiating to bring Yarmasing teachers to Chandeswori for a week during the monsoon break to observe and work with private school teachers as a way to improve their teaching skills. Teachers in Nicaragua can take part in private teacher training classes in Esteli, the largest city in the region, during their breaks and on weekends.
How you can help with these programs:
Donate: Top needs are for big books (for teaching reading at the primary level; Spanish), and elementary level books (especially non-fiction; English, Spanish, and bilingual). Supply needs include science experiment equipment for middle school, and wall posters in reading (Spanish and English), math, and science. Contact us for an updated list of specific needs.
Volunteer: We need readers, both adults and children, to record books on tape, in English and Spanish. Contact us for directions on recommended books and guidelines for recording.
Donate: We are seeking funds for grants to pay for travel, room and board, and tuition for teacher training.
Donate: Toothbrushes help students learn about dental hygiene. Contact us for a current list of needs beyond these.
Volunteer: We welcome educators or other volunteers who are willing to travel to school sites and work with teachers and students in all subjects (reading, math, science, history, social studies, English). Contact us for dates and costs of travel to Nepal and Nicaragua.
COMPLETED/ONGOING PROJECTS
Yarmasing, Nepal. Classroom conditions for the pre-school children improved immensely thanks to a kind donation of tables and chairs from the Evergreen Kiwanis club. The children from Logan, one of our sister schools, designed and produced educational toys and colorful fleece blankets that the students sit on. Namlo delivered school supplies, teacher training materials, and donated clothing to Yarmasing in May 2007.
Dushkun, Nepal. On our recent trip to Nepal we met with the teachers to deliver school supplies donated by our sister schools, and to deliver 90 bilingual (Nepali/English) books donated by Room to Read that will add to the school's lending library. Teachers are interested in training, especially in science and English.
Los Pinares, Nicaragua. Namlo delivered books, school supplies, clothing, and teacher materials donated by sister schools and individuals to Los Pinares in Feb. 2005 and Oct. 2006. Volunteer educators have worked with Los Pinares teachers to help them use donated materials.
Barrio Nuevo. The village appreciated the books and school supplies from Namlo donors, delivered on the construction oversight trip in 2006. Even the Mayor, who was present at a farewell ceremony for Hugh and Magda, who were in Barrio Nuevo during constuction, was impressed by the quality of the teaching materials.
Graduation Day in Yarmasing, May 2007. The Children are wearing clothes from Namlo Donors.
